Quake III Arena FAQ and How To Page

How You add Skins and Maps the Easy Way!

A number of files for Quake III Arena come with .pk3 extentions
These .pk3 extentions are actually Zip files.
These files only need to go into your /baseq3 directory and the Quake III programs will find them!
As a note: Only the Full Version of Quake III will work, not the DEMO!

Some of the Skins for existing players that are floating around have .tga extentions on them
These are picture files and most viewers will work on them

In order to replace that file in the orginal pak0.pk3, do the following

Do an extract of the orginal .tga from the pak0.pk3, with the use folder names checked,
to your /baseq3 directory using WinZip
This will create the sub directories you need to refresh the skin. Then, replace the .tga with
the new one and do an update of the archive.
I used this command line to integrate the skin:

pkzip -a -es -P -r pak0.pk3 models\*.* (working folder was Baseq3)

You will need the PK Zip available from ZD-Net HERE!
If you are an old MS-DOS person, you may aready have pkzip.exe around :)
This will take 5-10 minuets to update because the pk0.pk3 is so large, about 467 megs
Do not worry, you have the orginal .pk3 on your CD at \quake3\baseq3\pk0.pk3
Just re-copy and change the attribute and turn off read only,
otherwise you will not be able to try again on this update

If you are a newbe to computers, do not update the Skins or tamper with any of the .pk3 files
You may cause problems with Quake III Arena if you damage a file or 2

As always run a Virus Scanner on any file before trying it.

How to Add Color to your Screen Name

Again this using Notepad or Notepad+
Open q3config.cfg with Notepad
Find Your Screen Name, it's setname "Your Screen Name"

Color Codes are
1 = Red
2 = Green
3 = Yellow
4 = Dark Blue
5 = Light Blue
6 = Purple
7 = White

Next, Add the code, the format is ^1P^2i^3p^4e^5r
or as an example
setname "^1P^2i^3p^4e^5r" in place of
setname "Piper"
The "^" is the carrot sign and is shift + 6

Note: There is a limit on the size of the Screen Name
and the codes will add to the size even though the Screen Name is the same number of letters,
so test it out by logging into the game

More FAQ's will be added later

Good Luck!!! And lets have some fun Fragging each other!
